PLANS have been lodged to build 32 new homes - including 12 affordable ones - in Bridport's rundown south west quadrant.

The Thomas-Davies Trust and agents Olorun Planning Partnership from Honiton say their scheme, for land that used to be allotments, provides an excellent opportunity to 'breathe some life' into the area.

The 12 affordable homes would be two-bedroom flats and those on the open market include four two-bedroom flats, two three-bedroom maisonettes, nine threebedroom, two-storey houses and five fourbedroom, threestorey townhouses.

A spokesman for Olorun Planning said: "This would provide a good range of choice from firsttime buyers to those looking for larger family homes.

"The fourbedroom dwellings also provide a large room which would suit working from home."

The design has been chosen to be sympathetic to the feel of Bridport, say the agents, without being 'pastiche replicas'.

Also included in the scheme is a public amenity area between the flood bank and the River Brit and a public footpath.

The spokesman added: "The proposed site area is little more than a wasteland, inhospitable to walkers with no public access. Many of the windows within the buildings facing Gundry and Foundry Lane, have been closed, the general lack of surveillance makes the area feel unsafe.

This would provide a pleasant 'oasis' for the enjoyment of those who work and live in the town centre."

John Watts, director of Olorun has also written to west Dorset district planners saying: "We have recently become aware of the applications for the residential development of Priory Mills, the neighbouring property.

"While this application and the application for Priory Mills stand to be determined on their individual merit, should your authority be inclined to take a positive approach to the opportunity that these two applications present for the regeneration of the south west quadrant, we would be happy to discuss with you any matter that would contribute towards this objective."

Comments on the application have to be with West Dorset District Council by December 10.
