A PUB landlady's son has been jailed for eight weeks and barred from all licensed premises in Bridport - except the one run by his mother.

Thomas Andrew Greig, 31, of St Mary's Place, Bridport, was sent to prison after he admitted assaulting Jason Wright, publican at Bridport's No 10 bar.

He was also handed a two-year exclusion order, supported by Dorset Police, that bans him from all pubs and bars in Bridport apart from The George in South Street.

Richley Wood, prosecuting, said Greig entered No 10 bar with a friend on September 21 even though both were banned.

Mr Wood added that Greig, who was drunk, became 'extremely verbally abusive' when Mr Wright told the pair to leave.

The court was told 'a violent fracas' broke out with tables and glasses being knocked over and Mr Wright feared for his safety.

Mr Wood said Greig was restrained by other people in the bar but broke free and lunged at Mr Wright, hitting him around the head.

Grieg was sent to prison earlier this year for a similar offence and was previously barred from two pubs for violence, the court was told.

In mitigation, Ian Brazier said: "He is both ashamed and worried by his own actions when drunk.

"It has been a problem in the past.

"It has got him into trouble; it has got him into prison.

"It does not seem he is able to hold his drink as well as others. When he drinks, the pleasant and affable character he normally displays is replaced with a very aggressive one."

He added: "In many ways a ban might do him a favour."

Mr Brazier said Greig was in steady employment and was on good terms with the mother of his child, although they had split up.

Deputy District Judge Tim Pattinson told him he may be sent back to prison if he breaches the exclusion order.

He said: "All the people who want to enjoy a quiet drink and socialise need to be protected from someone like you. You are going to have to be taught a lesson."
