BOROUGH Mayor Lynne Herbert is hoping to raise a record amount for her Christmas appeal this year.

Coun Herbert said she wanted to surpass the £4,000 raised in 2003 by Doug Hollings for needy children, families and homeless people in Weymouth and Portland.

The money was used to buy toys and gifts, and also helped a group of eight local children visit Lourdes in France on a pilgrimage.

Fundraising is carried out in partnership with Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, which uses its network of contacts to identify suitable recipients.

Coun Herbert said: "As a councillor, I am only too aware of the difficulties that some individuals and families face trying to make ends meet, and this is particularly sad at Christmas when expectations are high to buy presents and treats.

"The mayor's fund can make a difference to some of those people who need a bit of support.

She added: "I am very happy to continue last year's successful partnership with Weymouth and Portland Lions Club.

"Money raised reached many different sections of our community.

"Support from residents, businesses and organisations will be greatly appreciated."

Weymouth Working Mens Club kicked off the appeal with a £166 contribution.

Donations can be made in person at the council offices on North Quay or sent in to Mayor's Christmas Appeal, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, North Quay, Weymouth DT4 8TA.
