BASED on John Irving's novel, we follow frazzled children's fiction writer Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) as his marriage falls apart following the death of his sons in a road accident.
Hardly the most obvious stuff of laughter, but when he hires student Eddie (Jon Foster) as his assistant, his wife Marion (Kim Basinger) trains the lad to do much more than proof-read...
To be fair the comedy is more bitter than sweet, but Tod Williams' film manages to explore the complexities of love as Eddie becomes both a willing pawn in the Cole's failing marriage and the catalyst by which they save themselves.
