KEVIN Bacon gives the performance of his life as a convicted paedophile released back into the community in Nicole Kassell's controversial and sensitively handled drama.
After 12 years behind bars, Walter (Bacon) re-emerges into society, ironically relocated to a bedsit directly opposite a school playground, where his brother-in-law Carlos (Benjamin Bratt) occasionally visits.
Walter finds employment at a lumberyard, where only the boss Bob (David Alan Grier) knows the shame of his past, and he strikes up a passionate romance with tomboy co-worker Vickie (Kyra Sedgwick).
However, the temptations of youth constantly surround Walter and he is frequently harassed by tenacious cop Lucas (Mos Def), who is itching for a reason to put the pervert back in jail. When the lumberyard's secretary Mary-Kay (Eve) discovers the truth about Walter, she sets in motion a series of events which sends the loner hurtling down a familiar path of self-destruction.
