HISTORY books used to follow a simple concept: they told the story of nations and civilisations through the actions of their monarchs and generals.
Now there's a tendency to study what life was like for ordinary people, rather than the rich and powerful.
This book follows that latter course, and a fascinating read it is, too. Ruiz obviously knows her stuff, and if you found yourself having to pose as an Ancient Egyptian peasant, I'm sure this would be essential reading.
It's incredibly comprehensive, yet never burdens you with tedious detail.
Chances are you'll be unable to read this book in company without trotting out the inevitable "did you know..?"
