SUPPORTERS of a sea angling jetty at West Bay are confident they can reel in the necessary cash.

Bridport Mayor Geoff Ackerman - chairman of the steering group - told the annual town meeting on Tuesday that he was optimistic the scheme would now go ahead.

He said: "Now that the sea defence scheme is completed, and a credit to all concerned, I remain hopeful that our efforts to provide an angling jetty for the disabled and children, as part of a multi water sports initiative will be successful."

During his annual report Coun Ackerman also highlighted the success of the town's crime-busting CCTV system.

"It continues to be of great benefit to the work of the police in combating crime and anti social behaviour," he said.

Coun Ackerman paid tribute to his councillors who had put in "thousands of hours of unpaid effort" for the benefit of the town during another very busy year.

And he said Bridport remained a vibrant and active town with many events occurring all year round.

The council's grants system was another success story, with some 26 organisations sharing £25,000 last year. The cash brought benefit to many people within the town and the surrounding area.

He also thanked his escorts and his "constant and reliable" deputy Coun Sandra Brown who had conscientiously stood in when needed.

Meanwhile the council staff at the Mountfield offices continued to work as a well oiled machine, providing support and guidance, he said.

Coun Ackerman, who is stepping down after three years as Mayor, added: "I would not have missed it for the world, and the pride and privilege I feel at having been your First Citizen for a third term remains as strong as ever."
