ORGANISERS of this year's Dorchester Carnival say they want something even bigger and better than last year.

The annual charity event, which is run by Dorchester Round Table, is scheduled for the weekend of June 18 and 19.

A series of events, including a four-legged race, a fun fair, a fireworks display and a bed-push race lead up to the finale on Saturday night when thousands are expected to line the streets of Dorchester for a fancy dress procession.

Carnival chairman Mark Allwood says the theme for this year is 'The World is a Stage' and entries are encouraged on any theme related to stage or screen.

He said: "Last year we had 30 entries, which was the best ever showing, but we're very keen to increase the numbers this year. We're trying to make the theme as open-ended as possible to encourage as many as possible to enter. Anything related to acting or films in some way will be brilliant."

Mr Allwood said the main focus of the weekend was to raise money for local charities.

He said last year around 25 good causes, including Scout groups and hospices, had received part of the £6,000 that was raised and requests were invited from local organisations for a share of this year's takings.

He said: "The organisations themselves can enter a float or those entering can nominate a particular cause to receive some of the money raised by the day.

"Each float will be collecting money, which will all be pooled and divided up after the event."

The procession will begin at 6pm in the lower market car park and pass through Fairfield, Maumbury Road, Cornwall Road, High West Street, Church Street and South Walks, before returning to the market.

Mr Allwood said the Round Table wanted as many floats as possible to enter this year.

He said: "It's completely free to enter and it should be great fun. It's a brilliant atmosphere and we want lots of people to be part of that."
