EIGHTY-ONE she may be but Poole resident Audrey Riman still has specs appeal.

Pensioner Audrey has been named the oldest entrant in the Specsavers Sexy Specs competition, for which there were 854 competitors.

In recognition of her efforts, London-born Mrs Riman was invited along to the Bournemouth branch to meet the staff.

"I was flabbergasted when I heard from them," she said.

"I can't even remember what the competition was about.

"I go in for quite a number of competitions, usually ones connected with television but I don't win anything for that."

Widow Audrey has been known as Rae since her days as a RAF teleprinter during the war.

Daughter Jane took her picture and entered the competition for her.

"I think it's sweet," said Jo Prout, store manager.

Colleague Nicky Blackmore added: "She was up for a laugh, bless her. Why shouldn't she have a go?"

Mrs Riman was presented with chocolates and a bunch of flowers.

"I'm thrilled with them," she said.

"Such beautiful colours."

Meanwhile Bournemouth resident Gayle Griffith, 18, has made the national final in the competition. All 12 entrants in the final are under 26.

To be hosted by TV presenter Tim Vincent, it will take place in London at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel on May 12.

Rod Stewart's fiance Penny Lancaster will act as judge, crowning one lucky winner Mr or Miss Sexy Specs 2005.

And Audrey's competition hopes are still alive. She said she hoped to enter the contest next year.
