Thorner sticks with old methods
MAX THORNER's favourite bedside reading is "Hogan the Modern Fundementals of Golf".
The only trouble is that the book is 50 years out of date, that's what his playing partners at Lyme claim.
At least they did until Monday when Max won the Seniors monthly Stableford by an immense 44 points.
Max's triumph was the latest in a succession of wins that have marked his year as seniors' chairman.
"It's all down to that book," said 68-year-old Max, "every time I open a page I learn something new".
He only clocked up 19 points in his first half which included a lost ball on the 17th.
In the next half he scored six pars in a row and even a bogey on the 7th earned him four points because of his 19 handicap.
It took an accountant, Tony Wakeling - his playing partner to add up the 25 points.
Runner up was John Baldry with 40 and third was Roger Forbes-Harris with 38.
Division 1 winner was John Terry 35 on countback from Roger Whitehead and Barry Goswell.
Twenty-six year old James Gisborne playing off a 5 handicap had one of his best rounds in the monthly medal on Sunday.
He had a birdie on the first hole, parred the next two and birdied the par 5 4th, then pars on the next two holes and finished the first half birdie, par, birdie.
He took just 30 shots. The second half was similar the first four holes were pars and he finished birdie, par, birdie, par, par.
His total was 63 shots, eight below the course. His handicap has been reduced to 4.
Runner up was Gerry Meridith from Hawkchurch 80 (13) 67 followed by Rob Winterborne 79 (12) 67.
Second division was won by Ian Mouland 84 (17) 67 followed by Graham Petterson 90 (20) 70 and Danny Hopkins 88 (17) 71.
Rita Whatmore is back in winning form after a two-year quiet spell.
On Thursday she took the Ladies medal and a Foundation Brooch with a net 72, six shots ahead of her nearest rivals Barbara Wheeler and Gill Cottrill.
Rita, from Charmouth, has been a member for 40 years and has spent most of that in the premier division. "I was really pleased to win again", said Rita, "it showed there's life in the old girl yet!"
Other winners: Division 2 - Deidre Potter, net 73 on countback from Cyndy Mudford with Helen Hellier third; Division 3 Marian Berenek, net 72, followed by Pat Jenkins and Elizabeth Linnert.
Lyme Regis' 'B' team beat Wareham 3-2 in a Hardy league match on Saturday. Winning home players were Mervyn Knight and Tony Miller; Mike Wilson and Barry Ebdon; and Peter Mayles and Frank Martin.
