CALLS are being made for a memorial to the much-loved Rex Trevett who died last week from cancer.

Two ideas are being suggested - one is a statue of the man, known as Mr Music, in Bridport's Bucky Doo Square, possibly in a conductor pose facing where he would have been on Saturday mornings conducting the band.

The other is for a bandstand in the borough gardens.

Admirer Mike Pember of Barrack Street said: "Rex gave so much to the life and vibrancy of the town, I feel he should be honoured in a permanent way. I really do hope that someone with influence could get behind this idea. Rex deserves it."

Former Big Band member Jacqueline Archer suggested building a bandstand in the borough gardens as a fitting tribute to Rex.

She said: "There was a LETS scheme awareness day in the borough gardens last Saturday and Bridport Town Council let us have it for nothing, they were so thrilled that someone wanted to use it, because nobody does.

"How nice it would be if Bridport had a bandstand there as a memorial to Rex. The only other place is Bucky Doo Square with all the traffic noise and there is enough clutter there already.

"Because Rex touched so many people and Rex supported the idea of a bandstand in the town it would be a fitting tribute."

Coun Sandra Brown agreed that a bandstand would be a wonderful idea and one that Rex had supported in his lifetime.

She added Bridport Rotary Club has already wanted to give the town one as part of their centenary celebrations but the difficulty had been agreeing where to put one.

Tony Smith of Bridport Rotary Club said they had been keen to put a bandstand or covered area in Bucky Doo Square but had been turned down by Bridport Town Council.

He added any decision to revive the scheme would be taken by the rotary council.
