A POPULAR charity event has been cancelled because of a lack of interest.

The Dorchester Moose Big Affair had been due to take place on July 3.

But organisers have announced that they were forced to cancel the fundraiser after only a handful of organisations agreed to take part.

Barry Smith, who has helped run the family fun days for the last few years, said the decision was taken following an emergency meeting between Dorchester Moose members.

He said: "It is with regret that we have had to cancel this year's Big Affair charity fun day.

"Unfortunately, in spite of many letters, phone calls, emails and appeals in the Dorset Echo, we did not have much response for charity stalls and especially for arena events."

He said the event, which was due to move from the King's Road playing fields to Sandringham Fields near Sandringham Bowling Centre this year, had been running on and off for 20 years.

"We have raised thousands of pounds for a variety of good causes over the years and helped the many charities attending to raise money for their needs.

"But this year, despite sending out more than 30 letters, we have only had five replies and so with six weeks to go we have decided to pull the plug on the event.

"We have also had problems getting arena events. I don't know why but people don't seem to be interested at all," said Mr Smith. "We hope to run this event every other year, commencing next year, so we will be looking for things for then, so if anyone may be interested we could put their information on record."

Dorchester Mayor Tim Harries described the decision to cancel the Big Affair as a shame.

"The Big Affair has been running for some time now and the Moose do a great deal of good work. It was one of the first events we attended last year when we started our year in office and we had a great time. We even managed to raise some money for our charities which was great.

"It's a terrible shame that there has been a poor response. I hope that they are in a position to start again next year, said Coun Harries.
