FAMOUS people, places and events are being depicted in vibrant spring colours at a flower display.

Owermoigne flower club's 14th annual show at Athelhampton House opened at the weekend with more than 1,500 flowers in various displays.

Club chairwoman Beryl Goodridge said the show was as colourful and interesting as any they had held before.

She said: "We have had all sorts of themes before, but this year we have decided to get close to home with famous people, places and events from Dorset.

"It's been up to the individual designers how they interpret the theme and we really have got some great work. We like to try to arrange the displays so they won't mask the house and furniture."

Mrs Goodridge said as well as attracting lots of local interest the show can expect visitors from farther afield.

She said: "It's always a very popular event and we find that people come regularly, year after year, by coach from as far away as Yorkshire."

Mrs Goodridge said the usual fee for entry to Athelhampton House and gardens applies, but there is no separate charge to see the floral displays.

The flowers will be on show every day until Thursday, from 11am to 5.30pm.

On Thursday afternoon from 2.30pm the flowers will be sold off in aid of the South Dorset Alzheimer's Society.
