DRIVERS in Dorset could face a prison sentence or a fine of up to £5,000 if they are caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs this summer.

For the next month, Dorset Police are stepping up their road patrols to catch any offenders on the road.

Police chiefs are now urging people to help them by reporting anyone suspected of drinking and driving.

The campaign will see increased traffic patrols and roadside checks on drivers as well as targeting repeat offenders.

Any driver involved in a collision will undergo a breath test irrespective of whether they are suspected of drink-driving or not.

Head of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit chief inspector Bob Nichols said: “The consequences of being caught drink-driving are extensive – including a minimum 12-month driving ban – a criminal record – up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

“There may also be further financial or social consequences such as losing your job or relationship.

“I urge motorists to ask themselves whether it’s really worth it.

“Our advice to drivers is not to get behind the wheel after drinking any alcohol at all, as research shows that even one drink can impair your driving – motorists just shouldn’t take the risk.”

Chief Insp Nichols advised people who are going out for a drink to plan ahead to make sure they can get home safely.

He said that people must take simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver or arranging overnight accommodation.

“I’d also urge people not to get into a vehicle if you think the driver has been drinking and report this to the police,” he added.

“We want anyone who suspects that a vehicle is being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs to contact the police immediately on 999 so that officers can intercept the vehicle.”
