A POWER cut in Weymouth that affected 3,500 homes was caused by a workman damaging an underground cable.

The power cut at 7am yesterday left 2,500 homes in the dark for 10 minutes and a further 1,000 homes without power for almost three hours.

The areas affected were Radipole, Bincleaves Road, Springfield Road and various traffic lights around the town. A spokesman for Southern Electric said that the engineers managed to re-route the power to 2,500 homes from their Portsmouth office but had to carry out more work in Weymouth for the remaining properties.

She said that the damage to the electricity cables was caused by someone working and hitting the cable.

She urged any workmen carrying out underground work to contact Southern Electric before work started so that they could be provided with help and diagrams about where the underground cables werere.

“By hitting a cable you not only cause expense to our customers and staff but also it can be dangerous,” she added.
