THE Dorset coast path beckoned for a group who stepped out for good causes.
Young people and leaders from the Tides Project Centre in Weymouth took part in a 20-mile trek from Ferrybridge to West Bay.
The challenge was organised by teenagers Andrew Thompson and Callum McGann who are raising money so they can spend a week at sea with the Tall Ships Youth Trust in July as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
They hope to be among the crew of a 72ft ocean-racing yacht, learning teamwork and leadership skills, competing in Challenger Race Week.
The coastal walk was also raising money for another good cause – a project in Gambia, West Africa, to purchase a new roof for a school.
Young people at Tides formed a link with Gambia seven years ago when they vowed to raise money to support the education of a young girl, Awa Kura. They have now learned that the roof of the Sanyang Village Primary School which she attends has collapsed.
Andrew, 17, and Callum, 16, researched and planned the route of the walk themselves and organised a campsite. Walkers had the option of staying the night and making the return trip back to Weymouth the next day. The pair, who are hoping to sail with the Tall Ships Youth Trust with fellow Tides member Karena Evans, viewed the walk as a way of motivating and challenging themselves. Young people taking part have different levels of fitness and will be fulfilling personal targets.
Andrew said: “I wanted to show people the great countryside in this area. We shouldn’t take it for granted.”
