A BIG weekend of celebrations is planned on the Nothe to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and the Weymouth attraction are hosting a number of nostalgic events and activities to mark the special occasion.

The weekend will include a D-Day picnic in the gardens and a major proms concert in the fort on Saturday, June 6.

A number of re-enactors will also appear at the Nothe throughout the weekend, with both American and British groups on parade.

The family fun event will have a real taste for the home front with demonstrations on cooking with war time rations, dig for victory, field hospital, bomb disposal, mine detection display, radio communications, the matchstick Fleet and military vehicles.

On Saturday a D-Day Picnic in the Park will take place from 2pm to 6pm in the Nothe Gardens.

The free event will feature military vehicle displays, stalls, games, a ration book trail and live music from folk group Bag of Rats.

In the evening crowds are expected to flock to the Proms in the Fort concert with the popular Light Cavalry band.

Spokesperson Jane Chandler, from the Nothe Fort events team, said: “One of the big highlights for the weekend will be the Saturday evening Proms in the Fort with the famous Light Cavalry Band.

“This promises to be a memorable evening ending with flag waving, fireworks and a spectacular surprise.”

Tickets for the Nothe Fort proms concert can be purchased in advance from Weymouth Tourist Information Centre priced at £10 for adults and £7 per child.

Also on Friday to Sunday the annual Wessex Folk Festival will take place throughout Weymouth harbour – providing a celebration of folk, music, dance and performance.
