• Borough Chief Executive, Tom Grainger was guest speaker at the Meeting Point Lunch at St Aldhelm’s Church Hall.

He referred to the various aspects of his role, and gave a clear, practical account of Council expenditure.

This amounts to less than 30 per cent of the tax paid by local residents and is shared between a wide range of services.

The meeting was attended by representatives of voluntary organisations who exchanged ideas and information of general interest.

  • The Southill Preservation Society is staging a public get-together at Southill Community Centre on Saturday, June 13 at 3pm.

Issues for discussion include the possibility of the open grassed area being built on, Radipole Lane being used as a race track and the amount of litter in the community.

Opportunities for young people is also on the agenda, as is the poor bus service and other aspects that people would like to see improved in Southill.

There will be refreshments, a display of local history, ideas for the future and a supervised play area so children are invited.

  • “Showtime” was the theme for the successful May meeting of the Radipole & Southill Horticultural Society organised by Daphne Smith in aid of the Weymouth Baptist Church fund for the under-privileged children of Bytom in Poland.

Mark Read demonstrated with a variety of beautiful floral arrangements and kept the audience entertained and amused with his tales of growing, showing, and his family's work in the floral art trade. The ladies from the Flowers for Fun Group had been busy all day making excellent displays, all based on shows from stage and screen, and these, together with all Mark's arrangements, were raffled at the end of the evening.

Many happy people carried these wonderful prizes home and all members of the society were delighted that the evening was so well supported, raising £216 towards the work that Brenda Woodsford and Doris Flack will carry out on their next visit to Bytom.

On June 8 the society are looking forward to welcoming Charles Rugeroni, who will present a slide-talk about the restoration of the Dorchester Borough Gardens and once again welcome all interested to the Southill Community Centre at 7.30pm.

Members are now busy preparing for their Summer Show on July 11.
