MOTORISTS can get free road safety advice as driver refresher courses are held in Dorset.

Dorset County Council is running courses this summer after a successful winter programme.

Since last October, more than 800 people have taken part, with the majority of drivers saying they were very useful.

Drivers can sign up for a three-hour theory course and follow this up with a 90-minute practical session if they choose. The theory courses, run by road safety professionals, aim to give drivers of all ages and experience an opportunity to update and improve their skills and knowledge. Topics covered include new driving techniques, changes in the law and Highway Code, motorways and roundabouts.

The practical sessions aims to improve defensive driving techniques, raise hazard awareness and increase drivers’ knowledge of the road. Drivers can also ask the instructor for help with things that bother them, such as parking or reversing difficulties.

Dorset County Council’s senior road safety officer, Sue Virgin, said: “There is no test or assessment involved, just an opportunity to refresh your driving skills in a non-threatening environment.”

Council environment director Miles Butler added that the courses have become popular as drivers recognise that developing their skills can help them deal with today’s traffic and reduce their risk of being involved in a crash.

Theory courses will be held at: Chickerell Willowbed Hall on Wednesday June 10 from 10am-1pm; Bridport Leisure Centre Pavilion on Wednesday July 8 from 10am-1pm; Small Digby Hall, Sherborne on Friday, July 10 from 2pm-5pm; Purbeck Sports Centre, Wareham on Wednesday, July 15 from 10am-1pm; Weymouth Avenue Sports Pavilion, Dorchester on Monday, July 20 from 10am-1pm; Stourpaine Village Hall on Tuesday, July 21 from 10am-1pm; Woodmead Hall, Lyme Regis on Thursday July 30 from 2-5pm.
