BUTTONS galore were alluringly displayed on three long tables, which, during Mrs Shirley Cousin’s talk, members of Broadmayne and West Knighton WI, felt and examined.
The exquisite craftsmanship of so many of them was admired and the ingenious ways manufacturers had of making scintillating buttons which shone and twinkled, was explained by Mrs Cousins.
She also put them into an historical and world context, some of them having been made in the 17th Century.
She was thanked by Kathy Woodrow for a fascinating talk.
The logo on the new programmes, created by Sandra O’Hara was admired and Sandra thanked for her excellent design.
Members offered to help with teas during the Scattering of Scarecrows weekend, a future lunch for a visiting group and they signed up for the proposed outing to Wells and for the next skittles’ night which is proving so popular.
Christine Bradshaw was thanked for the sweetly scented table centre of lilies and pinks and the new secretary, Marilyn Holehouse, explained the National WI resolution about saving the bees, which members voted to support.
As the institute’s representative, Margaret Cushing gave a report on the Village Hall Committee’s AGM and the institute agreed to support the proposal to see if the hall’s car park could be extended.
The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 11, when Gordon Bartlet will be bringing many of his musical boxes, all believed to be in working order and members were reminded to bring a flower from their garden, for the competition.
