Several inaccuracies appeared in the article ‘Have your say’ (Echo, May 18) regarding the Weymouth Areas Seniors Forum, which must be corrected.

Firstly, the Forum was originally formed in 2003 and changed its name in October 2007, not last year as reported.

The forum was put into suspension at the annual general meeting in November 2008 because too few nominations were received for the management committee, whose prime function is to organise the activities of the forum.

Committee members stood down due to reasons of ill health and other commitments.

I wish to correct any impression from your article that “there were tensions within the group”.

Quite the contrary, as the committee over the last four years had worked extremely hard to engage in positive relationships, while working to influence the planning and delivery of our local services.

For example, members of the committee played a key role in the much-respected Dorset-wide research project on care services.

This resulted in the publication of the ‘Campaign for Care’ report from the Dorset Association of Senior Forums and the ‘care cebate’ event that took place in Dorchester last year.

Any tensions that may have existed with the group and members of the council would refer to way back in the past when the Weymouth Area Senior Project, as it was known then, was in its infancy as a senior forum.

For the benefit of all local older people, let the past be the past, support the efforts of this refreshed over 50s forum and the committee volunteers who are trying to make a constructive difference.
