PIRATES let their cutlasses do the talking on Weymouth seafront.

Members of Weymouth Rowing Club are donning fancy dress to persuade people to enter their Pirate Fun Run.

They will be asking passers-by to get from one end of the seafront to the other quicker than they can row a gig across the bay.

Organiser Elsa Hirst said: “We are trying to raise money towards a our fourth rowing gig but we are also trying to raise the profile of the club and attract more young people.”

Entrants can wear fancy dress in the Pirate Fun Run in the ‘beat the gigs’ challenge on Sunday, at 11am.

Runners and walkers must go from the Jubilee Clock to the Oasis Cafe, at Bowleaze and back. At the same time pirate gigs will row across Weymouth Bay.

The event is open to all with medals and ‘treasure’ for all entrants. There will also be prizes in such categories as best pirates and fastest times etc.

The entry fee is £5 although it is free for children under 14 free if accompanied by a paying adult.

People can also raise additional sponsorship if they want to for the Weymouth Rowing Club or their own charity. The club has its fourth gig on order but needs to raise £20,000 to pay for it.

Registration is at the Jubilee Clock on the Esplanade from 9.30am onwards.
