Abbotsbury and Langton Herring

  • Abbotsbury VISITORS to St Nicholas Church on the afternoon of Sunday, May 3 were in for a big treat.

The Newenham String Quartet, a group of talented Dorset ladies, with Duncan Honeybourne on piano delighted the audience with their performances of Hayden Opus 77 No1 and Dvorak Opus 81.

The church was packed for this superb free concert arranged by The Friends of St Nicholas Church.

The quartet comprised of Brenda Soothill and Ruth James Playing violin, our retired district nurse Jean Channon, now in her 80s on viola and Ruth Lass playing cello.

The Friends provided refreshments after the performance.

Generous concertgoers donated about £300 toward the church fabric (building) fund.

Thanks go to all those who performed and organised this special event and to those who gave.

It is hoped that there will be another concert in the autumn.

  • THIS correspondent helped man the cake stall at the Plant Sale for Weymouth Lifeboats at Friar Waddon Farmhouse on Friday, May 8.

The setting up was done in Di Ludlow’s lovely garden in mist and drizzle but as the morning developed the sun eventually shone.

Stalls groaning with plants, cakes, produce, jewellery, refreshments and lunches were all ready for the influx of masses of people. More than any other year. Over 430 people passed through the gate.

Nobody was disappointed and the goods on offer quickly disappeared.

Our cake stall was filled with delicious things and we were thrilled when Liz Draper brought two big boxes of home baked bread straight from her range.

The total raised surpassed all expectations raising £3,714.48 for the Weymouth Lifeboat.

Well done to all involved.
