I was surprised to read that Dorset County Council’s cabinet has given the go ahead to build a zebra crossing in Fortuneswell between Coasters and the Co-op sometime in the next two years.

It has been said it will be good news for the people of Underhill but I disagree for several reasons.

Fifty per cent of the Co-op’s trade is from people that stop outside in the layby - so they will loose that trade straight away. It will also make their deliveries very difficult.

So, in effect, you are going to close the shop down, which in turn will be the final nail in the coffin for Fortuneswell so then there will be no reason to cross the road.

It won’t benefit shops and small businesses as there won’t be any left. You might as well turn all the shops into homes now and done with it.

It has also been said that some motorists go through Fortuneswell at unacceptably high speeds.

I would agree that a small minority do go to fast but there are other ways of reducing speeders. They are called policeman.

All we seem to want to do nowadays is physically block our roads, either by reducing the size of the road or placing speed bumps everywhere - 30mph is a quite acceptable speed through Fortuneswell.
