WALKERS are ready to brave the elements to mark a former Portland mayor’s courage.
They will take part in a 97-mile, one-week trek along the Jurassic Coast from today in memory of Ian Phelps.
The former Portland mayor died last year, aged 46, from bowel cancer.
Ian served as mayor between 2002 and 2003 and also worked as a town councillor.
Richard Phelps, 55, decided to organise the walk in memory of his younger brother.
He said: “Ian was first class. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him.
“Whatever anyone asked him to do, he would do.
“He never had a bad word to say about anyone.”
Six walkers who will complete the entire course will be joined by supporters for different legs of the route.
The walkers will stay overnight at campsites as they make their way from Old Harry Rocks to Exmouth.
They are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.
Richard, of Wyke Regis, said: “My brother bore his illness with great dignity and I know that the Weldmar Hospice where he spent many of his final days was a place close to his heart.
“As a family we thought it fitting that a year on we should do something together to raise funds for Weldmar whilst raising awareness of bowel cancer.”
