WEYMOUTH and Portland youngsters are getting ready to take flight at this weekend’s Beach Kite Festival.
More than 100 pupils have been attending workshops to prepare colourful and imaginative kites.
The workshops, held at the Pavilion, are teaching children how to make and fly kites for the Saturday to Monday event which attracts 40,000 people every year to the resort.
Leisure and tourism councillor Brendan Webster said: “These workshops have always proven to be very popular. All the children have fun creating a kite through hands-on learning and application of the skills involved.
“The emphasis of the workshops is to gain some background knowledge of the kites, learn how to fly them safely and enjoy sharing in the experience in some of the borough’s fine outdoor spaces.”
The free workshops were designed to include elements of the school curriculum, including English, maths, science and design. They will also continue over the weekend.
Saturday is casual kite flying day, from 10am to 5pm, while the main event is on Sunday.
There will also be night kite flying and a firework display at 9.30pm on Sunday.
The event attracts flyers from the USA, Germany and Spain.
