KID Creole And The Coconuts are the latest band to sign up for this year’s Camp Bestival.
The 80s stars, famous for songs including Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy and Stool Pigeon and led by singer/songwriter August Darnell, are headlining the festival’s opening night line-up on Friday, July 24.
The evening’s entertainment will also include a son et lumiere firework show, which will be accompanied by dancers from the English National Ballet.
Camp Bestival was founded last year by radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank who wanted to start a festival all-round appeal.
This year’s event includes more that 100 free events for families plus a host of kiddy-friendly attractions, including donkey rides, glitter wrestling, Punch and Judy, face painting, circus skills workshop and performances of Angelina Ballerina by the English National Ballet, who will also be holding workshops.
There is also a fancy dress theme of Animal Magic.
But there is also plenty on offer for festival-goers looking for great music.
So far, West Dorset’s own PJ Harvey has signed on the line, along with Chic featuring Nile Rogers, Mercury Rev, Candi Staton and Roots Manuva.
The Cuban Brothers return this year as performers and the hosts of the festival.
DJs include Rob de Bank, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan, Scratch Perverts and DJ Yoda and there will be comedy from Frankie Boyle, Marcus Brigstocke, Phill Jupitus and more.
Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall and his River Cottage café crew will be on hand to feed the thousands as will the WI with their cream teas and a vast list of food stalls providing grub and drinks from all over the world. There is even a Breastival area so the youngest members of the family won’t starve!
Rob da Bank said: “We are so lucky to have Lulworth Castle as the venue because it is a fantastic site.
“There are certain things we want to improve on last year, such as more toilets and more room for camping and car parking.
“But the theme of the weekend is ‘we’re all going on a summer holiday’ and we hope that is what people do.
“With the credit crunch and the economy, we want to encourage people to come to Dorset for Camp Bestival and then maybe hang around a bit longer and enjoy the county.”
