A NEW centre in Westham providing services and support for children and their parents was officially opened by South Dorset MP Jim Knight.
Westham Children’s Centre, next to Conifers Primary School in Radipole Lane, Weymouth, opened its doors earlier this year.
It was made official by MP Jim Knight who cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque, while Weymouth and Portland mayor Tim Munro and mayoress Alison Cocks cut a celebration cake.
Activities for the children included face-painting, a bouncy castle and storytelling.
The party was thrown by Dorset Sure Start, in partnership with Action for Children and Little Firs Day Nursery, which both lease the building.
The centre provides services for children under five and their families, including family support, health services, speech and language therapy, antenatal and postnatal support, training opportunities for parents and childcare.
It is part of a Dorset County Council plan to provide 23 children’s centres across the county by 2010.
The county council’s cabinet member for children’s services Toni Coombes said: “Involving children and their parents lies at the heart of our Every Child Matters vision in Dorset.
“By working with schools, health visitors, midwives and the voluntary sector, this centre brings together local services under one roof or in the neighbourhood, making it easier for families to get the support they need.”
Jon Brown, operational director for Action for Children, said the organisation is delighted to officially open the centre. He said: “The early years of a child, aged up to five, are arguably the most important years in a child’s development so it is important that they receive the best possible care and that parents have the right tools to give them the support they need,” he added.
“Children’s centres give children the opportunity to play, socialise and be stimulated so they can build skills and confidence. At the same time we want to work with parents and carers to help them support their child’s development.”
Westham county councillor Mike Byatt has welcomed the new centre, adding: “This is a fantastic new children’s centre. It will give children and parents the best services, support and opportunities they deserve.”
