Victims of the Equitable Life pension policy scandal have come together to form a Dorset Equitable Members Action Group.

The group is pressing for compensation for people who have suffered as a result of the regulatory failures by successive governments in the decade from 1990 to 2000.

Equitable Life was allowed to continue taking on new savers when it was effectively insolvent. The Parliamentary Ombudsman, reporting in July 2008, called on the Government to compensate policyholders.

The action group is demanding that the Government follow the ombudsman’s recommendations.

Dorset EMAG was set up in March as a result of an initial meeting organised by Dr Sue Farrant, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for West Dorset.

Its first group meeting was held in Sherborne last week.

Dr Farrant said: “More than 3,000 Equitable Life pension policy holders in Dorset have been rewarded for planning sensibly for their retirement by having their savings snatched away from them.

“They are determined to fight for justice.

“I fully support them and I’m pleased that I have been able to help set up a Dorset action group.”
