ANDY Miles will be living up to his name when he goes the distance for his mum in the London Marathon.
The Weymouth postie, aged 35, plans to raise £2,000 for the Spinal Injuries Association after his mum Mary was left paralysed last year.
She contracted Transverse Myelitis, a neurological syndrome caused by the inflammation of the spinal cord.
Mary, 70, suffered from shingles which led to tingling in her legs and arms and eventual paralysis.
She spent seven months in the spinal unit at Salisbury District Hospital and now lives at Castle View Nursing Home in Poundbury.
Devoted Andy spends a lot of time visiting his mum.
He said: “When she was in hospital I saw a lot of people in there aged 10 or 12, who had fallen out of a tree or something.
“It touched me because they had so many problems with simple things like going to the toilet or opening a door.
“Mum has gone through so much suffering and the Spinal Injuries Association has helped her a lot.
“This is her way of paying the charity back.”
This marathon will be Andy’s third and final marathon. He has already completed the London Marathon and also ran the Edinburgh Marathon.
He said: “I’ve said before that my body is worn out and this is going to be my last marathon.
“Everyone who knows me knows that I love a challenge.
“People who I deliver to have been very supportive and a few of the Littlemoor shops have sponsored me.”
Thoughts of his mum will spur him on to the finish line, he said.
“I’ve seen all the pain that mum’s gone through. The Spinal Injuries Association is a worthy cause and helps so many.”
