Nothing and nobody is going to stop randy teenagers having sex (to call it ‘making love’ would be a misnomer).

Morals have nothing to do with it (if, indeed, the word is known at all), but surely one scintilla of intelligence or plain commonsense would hint that simple precautions would obviate the avoidable equation that sex equals pregnancy.

Contraception is far better than abortion, but even that solution is readily available and carries no stigma these days.

Perhaps the youngsters’ cheerful nonchalance would be somewhat curbed if they and their respective families had to foot the ongoing costs of providing for the newcomer without any assistance from council or state (i.e. taxpayers’ money)?

One other point: the matter is always viewed from the angle of the ‘mum’ (father is probably long gone from the scene).

What about the baby?

Would you like an immature, moody, volatile teenager for your mother, when her carelessness probably resulted in your conception?

If you are lucky, you may be loved and cared for, but what if her attention span falters in the face of the daily grind and practicalities of raising you?

You could end up neglected, ill-treated, abused, even taken into care.

You don’t have much say in the matter, but your putative parents might bear it in mind before they produce you.
