RENEWED calls for traffic controls at a Bridport blackspot have been made after two drivers suffered whiplash injuries.

Angry residents and councillors say traffic lights on a roundabout are urgently needed to allow vehicles to get out of St Andrew’s Road on to Sea Road North – especially during peak times.

The move follows a two-car collision on the junction.

Coun Ronald Coatsworth, chairman of West Dorset District Council and a resident of the area said he had been campaigning for years to improve safety. He said: “Four years ago we had the money and it was going to be done but the money was spent on something else.”

Simon Williams, chairman of the St Andrew’s Road and District Residents’ Association, says the scheme would encourage a rat-run from Victoria and Coneygar roads.

Mr Williams said just the people living in the area would account for more than around 2,000 cars using the junction.

He added: “We have been campaigning for at least seven years. It gets put forward, then removed. All we want is a mini roundabout so that people can turn right out of St Andrew’s Road safely.”
