YOUNG unicyclist Jerry Thompson is ‘running away with the circus’ – and his mum doesn’t mind one bit.

Jerry, aged nine, of Broadwey, Weymouth, will be wowing audiences once again when he joins Paulo’s Americano Circus in their Portland shows.

The daring youngster made an appearance last year after being spotted by the circus troupe when it took to Weymouth to recruit local talent.

His performance with the clowns was so impressive that he has been asked to return, this time with a bigger bike and adventurous new tricks.

Jerry said: “I find it really fun when I’m doing all my tricks. I can ride down steps, jump up curbs, and skip. I practice every day.

“I think I might start in the audience and ride down the steps into the ring.”

It all started for Jerry when his parents bought him a unicycle for Christmas. “I thought it could be a waste of money,” said mum Heather.

“I thought it was one of those presents like a foot spa which you put in the loft and never use again. But he has really taken to it.”

Jerry has since moved on to a giraffe unicycle, which Heather says is even bigger than her son. “The neighbours have been entertained by him,” she said.

“A lot of them have commented on his perseverance and determination. I would like to be able to ride one but I haven’t got the patience or the sense of balance like he has.

“He practices just outside on the street and ties a rope to the lamppost, one of his friends holds the other side and he skips.

“He is really excited. He enjoyed it so much and has been looking forward to the circus coming. He would actually like to join the circus. I don’t mind – I have always wanted to join the circus.”

Paulo’s Americano Circus is open now until Sunday, April 19, and Jerry will appear with the clowns in one of the final performances.
