YOUNG people could be in line for new leisure facilities in western Dorchester.

PCSO Mark Wodarek-Black and community worker Kris Hallett of Dorset Community Action are compiling a wish-list devised by the youngsters themselves.

And they hope to gain funding from various agencies to give young people in that part of the county town more to do in their free time.

PCSO Wodarek-Black said: “We want young people to have plenty to do to keep them fit and busy.

“It will mean less anti-social behaviour. The new skatepark in Dorchester is opening soon and that is going to be fantastic. But we thought it would be good to have something more on the western side of Dorchester for youngsters who live on this side of town and at Poundbury.”

He said one idea had been to bring the old skatepark equipment from the site in Charles Street that is soon to close and letting young people and children use it nearer to home.

He added: “And then we thought instead of bringing old stuff why not see if we could organise something from scratch and look into finding funding for it.

“There is section 106 money from new developments that might be available for instance.”

He and Mrs Hallett are seeking views of young people to find out what they would like and use.

Mrs Hallett said: “It’s the age group 10 to 15 that needs more in their leisure time, after school and during the holidays.

“They tell us there’s nothing locally that they can get to.

“So we’re asking them what they would like and looking into it. It ties in with what’s emerging from Pact meetings about problems with youngsters hanging around.

“And it ties in with the new Dorchester Area Community Plan for 2009 to 2012 which includes aims to provide new and updated play, recreational and leisure facilities for young people. The first part is to ask the children.”
