Alistair Chisholm recommends speedy implementation of the Dorchester Transport and Environment Plan as the answer to the unacceptably high levels of pollution in Dorchester's High Street.
Unfortunately that will only go some way towards a solution.
As the Echo reported on March 26, the passage of traffic through Dorchester is not only creating unacceptable pollution levels, it is also damaging the fabric of the buildings, many of them listed.
Under the DTEP, the main road through Dorchester's Town Centre would only be pedestrianised during the day.
From 5pm each day until 9am the following day heavy traffic would still be allowed to drive from east to west through Dorchester.
The best possible answer for Dorchester would be permanent, irreversible pedestrianisation of the Town Centre from All Souls Church in High East Street up to the Red Umbrella café in High West Sreet.
That would help to ensure that the only vehicles entering the town were driven by residents, by people who worked or had business in the town, or by people who wanted to shop there or visit its many and varied attractions.
Permanent pedestrianisation should be coupled with a policy of ensuring that all future planning decisions take account of parking needs.
