VOLUNTEERS are needed to mentor and befriend minority school pupils.
Dorset County Council’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (Emas) is calling for the support to help youngsters.
The service provides support for schools and families in which children use English as an additional language or where there are issues related to their ethnicity or cultural heritage.
A council spokesman said mentoring involves establishing a relationship over a set period of time and emphasises working towards set goals.
The befriending scheme is more informal and lasts longer.
Emas head Barbara Hart said: “We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can encourage children and young people to make positive changes in their life, help to develop social skills, encourage confidence and raise self-esteem.”
Training and supervision will be given and travel expenses will be paid.
Criminal Records Bureau checks will also need to be carried out on volunteers.
