When we arrived at the pool, the whole place seemed deserted as we made our way around the outside. Now this was a real lido, built in 1936 and in classic art deco style. When we arrived just after 5pm, I think the staff was just preparing to go home as the lady supervisor warned us that they were closing at 6pm and “would we have time to swim a mile?” No problem and we were invited in to an almost empty pool populated by one lonely aging triathlete. You can tell which pools are unheated although this one was according to Janet’s book. I would say it was a crisp 16 degrees which was all the more reason for keeping up a good pace. Being a 50 metre pool we only had 32 lengths to count and even I could do that without losing concentration. The task completed, we had a quick shower and a brief chat to the staff who were already to walk out the door. Good timing!
