We eventually found our way to the pool at Wolverton which appeared to be a rather rundown part of Milton Keynes. The outside of the building looked rather careworn but a cheerful lady greeted us and we immediately warmed to our challenge. The pool was 33 x 12 metres, heated and inviting. The lifeguard had a rather lonely vigil as apart from one other swimmer, we were the only people using this lovely facility. We completed our 48 lengths and chatted for a while. Intermittent rain was falling by then and the young lifeguard confirmed that it had been a rotten summer. We spoke to the pool manager on our way out. He had worked at the pool for 15 years and it was the last season. Sadly the pool was closing at the end of the summer to be replaced by what everyone hoped would be a spanking new 50 metre indoor pool. I know that this country needs more 50 metre heated indoor pools for competition purposes but we still came away shaking our heads. This was a sad moment in our challenge.
