We drove down to Letchworth reaching the pool in early afternoon. The young chap on reception and the pool manager who was also in the office at the time made us welcome. It was a sunny summer afternoon and the pool was already very busy . There were a lot of youngsters, many of them dressed in socks, which seemed to be the fashion statement here. There was plenty of space for sunbathing etc and the kids were having a whale of a time. The changing area was away from the main pool and I met a swimmer who was debating whether to use the lockers as they had been broken into recently. This was another fifty metre freshwater heated pool and we rattled off our 32 lengths in good time. When we got out, Dave treated me to a cup of coffee and we chatted to the pool manager. He was more or less employed full time at the pool, doing maintenance during the winter. He had organised a group swimmers to swim on Christmas Day (doesn’t everyone swim on Christmas Day?)
