A dolphin has washed up on Weymouth beach.

The dead mammal has been spotted near to the Pier Bandstand.

One walker who spotted the dolphin said: “It’s just so sad to see. They’re such lovely creatures and it’s heart-breaking when these things happen. I guess it’s just the way nature works.”

It comes after two dead dolphins and sea birds washed up at Chesil Cove, Portland following Storm Bert.

The Weymouth and Portland Marine Litter Project have issued some advice on what people should do if they come across a dead dolphin or seal on the beach.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We often get asked what to do about dead dolphins and seals people find on the beach.

“Dolphins, porpoises and whales should be reported to the CSIP cetacean stranding investigation programme by email: strandings@nhm.ac.uk

“They rarely have the resources to recover the animal so if possible take photos including any injuries and include:

  • Location, time, date found
  • Sex if possible
  • Approximate size
  • Decomposition

“Seals can be reported to: kimmeridge@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk

“If you find a live cetacean stranding or a seal that is in distress (it's normal for them to rest on land) call British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546.

“Animals on Chesil usually get washed back out to sea eventually, on Weymouth beach contact Weymouth Town Council.”
