THOUSANDS of pounds of damage were caused when winter storms blew into Dorset in the winter of 1990.

Christmas Day 1990 was a very stormy day for much of the UK. An active front passed through the UK bringing heavy rain and violent squalls, indeed, there were tornadoes reported in the West Country.
Wind speeds gusted up to 80mph causing structural damage to buildings and bringing down power lines blacking out around 100,000 homes in the south and west of England.
There was flooding due to the heavy rain, the run up to Christmas had been wet and windy.
Gale force winds blew the New Year in with a vengeance – and meteorologists predicted more storms over coming days.
Preston Beach Road in Weymouth began the road in usual fashion – it was closed to traffic after strong winds brough sea and shingle over the wall.
A house blew down in Southview Road Weymouth during the gales. The rear of the house collapsed and the road had to be sealed off as a result.
On the A35 at Askers a truck was blown over by the force of the wind.
People struggled to walk along the causeway at Portland Beach Road.
In Thorncombe Woods trees were topped by gales.
Further west the force of the storm was felt with a tree at the Haddon House Hotel in West Bay badly damaged.
