TWO sheep are missing after the fire service was called to rescue a large flock of sheep.

Firefighters were alerted to reports of around 70 sheep that were stuck on a riverbank this morning (November 24).

On arrival, it was discovered that 66 sheep had been able to bring themselves to safety.

DWFRS rescued two sheep, but two others have not yet been found.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said: “At 11.28am we received a call to sheep that were stuck on a riverbank. A crew from Sturminster Newton and a Tech Rescue Team from Weymouth were mobilised. 

“There were approximately 70 sheep in total, 66 self-rescued and 2 rescued by DWFRS, leaving 2 unaccounted for.”

In a separate incident, firefighters were called to extinguish a van fire at around 8am in Hinton St Mary.

A spokesperson for DWFRS said: “At 8.07am we received a call to a vehicle fire in Stearts Lane.

“A crew from Sturminster Newton attended and found a van on fire, this was extinguished using one hose reel jet.”
