Hundreds of people gathered in the streets of Weymouth to march against plans to build a waste incinerator on Portland.
A huge community backlash was sparked by the Government's decision to give the green light for Powerfuel's 'energy from waste plant' earmarked for land at Portland Port.
Stop Portland Incinerator Campaign subsequently organised a protest where hundreds of local residents met at the Jubilee Clock at 11am today.
Following speeches from several people, people then proceeded to march down St Mary Street and St Thomas Street.
Amongst those in attendance were some of the sailing team for Great Britain.
The plan for the incinerator was initially refused by Dorset Council, prompting an appeal - and a public inquiry.
As previously reported, Dorset Council says it won't be taking legal action against the government's decision to allow the waste incinerator as it can't justify spending a huge sum of money on a case it doesn't think it can win.
Now, campaign group Stop Portland Waste Incinerator, acting through Debbie Tulett, who is represented by law firm Leigh Day, has filed a legal claim challenging the Secretary of State’s decision to grant planning permission.
Plans to take their legal claim to the High Court began earlier this year and the group has been fundraising to cover legal fees of £40,000.
Weymouth Town Council has also agreed to contribute £2,000 to support Stop Portland Waste Incinerator’s legal challenge on the proposed incinerator.
