A number of much-needed affordable homes have come on the market as the first stage in a £23m scheme is completed.
The first phase of The Hops, an affordable housing development in Eldridge Street next to Dorchester's Brewery Square, has been unveiled.
Developed in partnership between housebuilder AJC Group and housing association Aster Group, this project brings 56 energy-efficient homes to the community, including the first-ever affordable four-bedroom family homes in the Brewery Square area.

The 31 houses on Eldridge Street have been completed. These contemporary three and four-bedroom terrace houses are available through Aster Group’s shared ownership scheme.
The next phase of the project, the 25 one/two-bedroom apartments at the Malthouse, is expected to be completed in December.
The terraced houses cost around £125k, while the flats cost around £55k.
The demand for larger affordable family homes has long been a challenge in Dorchester, with the completion of the development's first stage being welcomed by Mayor Robin Potter.
He said: "Housing in the town is a very good idea. Especially if it is at a rate that is more affordable.
"We are very pleased that an affordable mix of homes for buyers is available, for families or younger people starting out.
"This type of housing is very much needed."
Formerly a vacant brownfield site, The Hops, is AJC Group’s largest development to date and is due to be completed in December. Part of the broader 20-year regeneration of Dorchester’s town centre, Eldridge Street have an EPC rating of B.

David Cracklen, Director of AJC Group, said: “Dorchester has long faced a shortage of affordable housing, and we are immensely proud to deliver the first collection of four-bed family homes in Brewery Square. These spacious homes meet the needs of larger families without compromising on quality or energy efficiency.
“At AJC Group, we are committed to setting a new precedent for affordable housing, one that we hope will serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring future developments to prioritise both size and sustainability."
The application was first submitted two years ago but was amended following consultations with residents and council officers. This included a new road layout.
There is parking available for every home, including secure undercroft parking for the 25 apartments.
The project is in line with AJC Group's commitment of building 500 affordable homes by 2028 across the south coast.
