Campaigners have organised a demonstration in opposition to new US president elect Donald Trump.

Protesters say they will show their opposition to the threat Mr Trump poses to women’s rights, the environment, and in encouraging the rise racism and the far right.

The demonstration, titled ‘Dump Trump’ will take place along New Bond Street in Weymouth outside the Range today (Saturday, November 9) from 12pm.

It is part of a series of protests up and down the country, with others previously taking part in Leeds, Liverpool, Portsmouth and the US Embassy in London in the wake of the election result.

The 78-year-old property tycoon declared on Wednesday he had won a 'magnificent victory for the American people', defeating Democrat rival Kamala Harris.

His victory marks a comeback in a political career which has been marred in controversy, criminal charges, accusations of racism and sexism, and the US Capitol riots on January 6 2021.

He became only the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms, the other being Grover Cleveland.

Stand Up To Racism Dorset has organised the event, with support from other campaign groups; the Dorset Extinction Rebellion, the Dorset Unison, and the Dorset Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Lynne Hubbard, joint chair of Stand Up To Racism Dorset, said: “Donald Trump's overt racism and bigotry gives confidence to fascists and the far right not just in the US but here in the UK and elsewhere.

“When you concede to racism you give it oxygen and we know that Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson have celebrated Trump's victory and support his policies.

“That is why we are demonstrating to show we will not let Trump's hateful ideas become acceptable here."

Caz Dennett, from the local branch of the Extinction Rebellion, said: “The US has pumped more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than any other country on the planet. Trump's rallying call to ‘drill, baby, drill’ threatens to step this up further.

“His victory is an epic fail for the environment. But Trump can’t stop progress. The drive for low-cost clean energy and the transition to a green economy has its own momentum in the US and around the world. Our movement is bigger than Trump."
