A COUNTY-WIDE street trading policy is to be introduced across Dorset for the first time.
Until now street trading rules have been governed by policies set up under the former district and borough councils, which means they vary from area to area.
Dorset Council is now asking for opinions on a new Street Trading Policy which will unify the rules and regulations both in public spaces and areas which might be privately owned, but accessible to the public.
An online and paper consultation has now opened and will remain available until January 26th.
Said a Dorset Council spokesperson: “The new draft policy sets out the rules for street trading, including how traders get permission to operate, what can be sold, and where trading can take place.
It also covers exceptions, enforcement, and how to appeal decisions. This policy aims to ensure street trading supports the community and local economy, providing a clear and consistent framework for regulating street trading in Dorset Council area."
The council say key points of the draft policy include all street traders being required to gain permission to trade in accessible public areas, unless exempt by law or by local dispensation, and street traders needing to meet set criteria to gain consent.
Said Weymouth councillor and Cabinet portfolio holder for the area: Cllr Gill Taylor, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Housing, said: “Street trading plays a vital role in our community by providing local entrepreneurs with opportunities to operate their businesses where they have the best chance to thrive. It adds vibrancy to our streets, offers diverse products to residents and visitors, and can boost the local economy.
“Dorset Council values the input of our residents and businesses. Your feedback on the Street Trading Policy will help us create a fair and effective system that benefits everyone. Please take a few moments to share your views and help shape the future of street trading in our community.”
