Weymouth's busiest street is set to reopen later today after it was closed for emergency repairs.

King Street in Weymouth has been closed since Monday so that Wessex Water could repair a collapsed sewer.

Wessex Water has now confirmed that the work is expected to be completed a day early, and the road will open later today.

The closure had been expected to last until Friday.

The busy street is a key route for traffic heading into the centre and also across town and towards Portland. It has been shut both ways between Queen Street and Crescent Street/Gloucester Mews.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “We’ve been carrying out emergency repairs on a collapsed sewer on King Street since Monday, but the hard work of our team has ensured it has been completed ahead of schedule, meaning the road is expected to be reopened later today.

“We would like to thank customers, businesses and road users for their patience during this essential work and apologise for any inconvenience caused.’’

Previously the Echo spoke to traders who were worried that the closure would impact trade by making the town less accessible.
