RE: The First No 1 bus service, Weymouth to Portland.
This service has never been very good in my view and until recently, mainly single deckers used.
If you want to go to the cinema in the evening you have to walk through town to the King’s Statue for the bus, likewise if you wanted to go around the quayside for an evening out you have to walk round to the law courts or the King’s Statue.
Being an OAP I find both those options daunting and not very safe so don’t go out at night.
Now King Street is closed for works the situation is dire. Waiting this week for a bus, all standing in the drizzle across the bus depot entrance. 3.30pm and the King Street road workers were packed up and finished for the day.
A single decker came for Portland, whatever was happening on Portland Road, the traffic was horrendous, to add to the misery.
The authorities, whoever is running the show, want to make it as difficult as possible for residents and the No 1 bus passengers.
The ‘barge’ has Damory bus double deckers at the back of the Range.
Locals could use the cinema at night if we had that service which goes over the Town Bridge.
We could use the quayside bars and restaurants, feeling safer than walking round to the law courts.
The town is dying and the authorities have no regard for Wyke and Portland residents who rely on public transport.
When M&S move out local elderly residents will not be able to get out there (Gateway site) and yet another hole in the dying town.
