Police dispersed crowds who had gathered for an unlicensed music event in west Dorset.

As reported, Dorset Police Special Operations deployed officers, a Force Support Group van from Weymouth and an anti-interceptor car on Berne Lane, at the turn off to Stonebarrow Lane in Charmouth at around 5am on Sunday morning (November 3.) Drones were also sent out by the force.

It has now been revealed that around 75 people attended the event, with officers reporting loud music being played. Crowds were then dispersed.

An unlicensed music event (UME) is an unlawful and unregulated gathering where often loud music is played for several hours.

According to Char Valley Parish Council, there have been reports of incidents off that lane in the past.

Tamsin Ely, clerk of the Char Valley Parish Council, said: "We are aware that there have been a couple of incidents of the same nature off Stonebarrow Lane in the past.

"We have heard that it has mainly been due to groups of youngsters playing music loudly in the field, but we have received no official complaints from residents about this issue."

In March this year, police asked the public to be vigilant for signs of unlicensed gatherings at disused buildings, industrial sites or in rural areas.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police received a report at 5.05am on Sunday, November 3 of an unlicensed music event in the area of Stonebarrow Lane near Charmouth.

“Officers attended and conducted an area search. They located a gathering of around 75 people with loud music reportedly playing.

“They liaised with those present, ensuring the music was turned off and those in attendance began to disperse. No arrests were made."

The spokesperson went on to provide assurances to the local public following the disruptions caused by the event. They added: “We are committed to responding to reports of this nature, which can cause concern for local communities and others effected.

"We responded swiftly to this incident to ensure it was promptly brought to a safe conclusion and no further disruption was caused.

"We would urge residents or members of the public to report any incidents of this nature to police."
