A parish council wants to see a railway bridge removed to avoid constant flooding.
Parish councillors in the picturesque village of Toller Porcorum, near Dorchester, have had enough of the consistent flooding to Barrowland Lane.
The road, which leads to the village, is prone to flooding around the now disused railway bridge and was closed off earlier this month due to the levels of flooding
Neil Farmer, chairman of Toller Porcorum Parish Council, said: “We had a routine meeting with highways team regarding the flooding, and the parish council is sworn to wanting the bridge moved, and the road level raised to reduce the flooding.
“Dorset Council are looking into working with the National Highways Agency who are responsible for a potential project.
“The advice for when it is flooded is don’t go through it - it’s not rocket science and when it’s flooded it’s deeper than it looks.
“There is an old flood gate there, which I would advise people to ignore, and to find another way around the area. Do not risk driving through, as we have already found two number plates when the water has cleared, and it’s only October.
“The pumping system is functional, and all water does run off through the lane in wet weather. I think it’s happened around seven or eight times this year already.”
Dorset Councillor for the Eggardon ward, Cllr Neil Eysenck said: “We are currently investigating the possibilities to reduce flooding. It’s very early days but it’s clearly been an issue, and something both myself and parish council would love to address because there are too many cars getting damaged when going through there.”
A spokesperson for Dorset Council said that they are looking into ways to prevent flooding. The spokesperson said: “We are working with partners on a solution to prevent the ongoing flooding in this area.”
Dramatic photographs have previously shown the extent of flooding by the bridge with cars getting stuck, which has forced the road to close with drainage crews having to work to clear away the water away.
Dorset Council would also like to encourage anyone who notices flooding on the highway to please report it on the website at www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/report-flooding
